I am a R.D.H. interested in taking your course but I live in a fairly small city… Do you have advice or an opinion regarding my approach to being accepted in the community… I would need referrals from dentists, pediatricians, etc?
Hi, Thank you for contacting me about your interest in orofacial myology and the potential for success. From state to state and even from U.S. city to city, there is a different demand for well trained orofacial myologists. It is not usually a specialty area that you just walk right into and enjoy immediate income and lots of referrals. Although that can and does happen at times, it is better to think about the harder road to success. When I first began orofacial myology (myofunctional therapy) for patients/clients, I waited around a couple months to start my schedule book filling somewhat. Then I found a few orthodontists who kept me busy enough that I didn’t even have to look for more business. After a time, word spread and speech pathologists, dentists, and patient referrals starting increasing my caseload. In some areas, there seem to be more knowledgeable dental professionals who look for qualified orofacial myologists. Also, some facets of orofacial myology might appeal more to you and might offer an easier “in” such as elimination of sucking habits. In that case, pediatricians were very interested in my program (known as Unplugging The Thumb)http://www.unpluggingthethumb.com/ and I was able to receive referrals for sucking habits from them. On day 4 of our course we give you examples of brochures and forms used to encourage referrals and to respond to them, as well as other types of business forms, but you would probably want to create your own more individualized forms for your own office. As an RDH, it is important that you are fully licensed before signing for our Neo-Health intensive course. My best,
