Q:
Hi, I need some guidance.
I have 2 boys with serious nail biting problems that need dealing with before they start their full programs.
Is the Nail Biting program Growing the Nails too childish for a teen and a mature 8 year old?
Is there any info on adapting the plan to older clients?
A:
It should be fine for the 8 year old. For older kids, using UTT or Growing the Nails (GTN), we suggest having the client approach it as though they are helping a younger child or sibling. I ask them to be the therapist. Have them read the story as though reading to a younger person. Tell them that by taking on the adult role, it helps them to help themselves. As they role play helping a younger child, they internalize the program. You have some freedom to make small tweaks to adjust to maturity as long as you are following the main goals and concepts. Let me know how it goes. You have my “permission” to be creative within the parameters of the program in order to best suit each client.
