Hi, I have been looking through some of the Orofacial myology evaluation sheets in the Myo Manual and have noticed the Myo Lip Meter average strength is 3.0 RU – 5.00 RU. I had asked another trainer what strength I should expect to achieve. For children I was told 10 – 16 LB that are the equivalent of the RU, resistive units. For adults they said it is 15 Lbs – 20 Lbs (they don’t have the Myo Lip Meter, they use some older type of tool). I am having difficulty getting the lip strength to be anywhere near those numbers. I have a few adult patients and so far the highest reading is around 7 RU. Do you have a specific lip strength range for children and adults?
The original creator of the lip strength meter method, as far as I know, is Dan Garliner. He taught me his method personally and I used his original tool and method for over 30 years. The findings were consistently 3-5 lbs on the original lip meter for 100s of clients I screened at my clinics and at dozens of schools. Those who had lower numbers were clients with orofacial myology disorders of various types. I have tried to figure out how and why a trainer could come up with such unreasonable numbers. I know of some who work primarily with individuals with Down Syndrome, and they provide certain types of lip exercises where the patient is told to hold a heavy bottle filled with water between the lips. Perhaps she is able to get some of them over the typical/average readings, at least initially. More likely, however, is that her method of testing is unlike Dan Garliner’s, upon which the normal range was based. He taught me the specific way to hold and pull the lip meter that was used to establish the norms of 3 – 5 lbs (now RU is equivant to LB). The newer Myo Lip Meter is “myo friendly” since it eliminates many of the difficulties associated with the former lip meter scale.
