8-year old girl with a pretty severe tongue thrust and related speech errors
Saturday, 15 November 2014
I recommended a lingual frenectomy, which was done last week. She is coming back to therapy Wednesday, and I was wondering if there are specific exercises that should be done post-frenectomy to avoid scar tissue from forming.

Little girl who got her tonsils out unable to say “H”

A nice "flow" of conversation will help to embed that "h" sound within words and phrases rather than just saying it at the beginning.

There is no easy help for an adult (or child) tongue sucker. That's where psychology has to be incorporated. As with all noxious oral habits, you want to work first on Awareness...
Baby’s tongue sticking out of her mouth.
Sunday, 30 March 2014
Today I saw a Mexican American baby 2 1/2 months old that frequently but not always has her tongue sticking out of her mouth. It reminds me of a Down's baby, but she has no other Down Syndrome characteristics.
5 year old that stopped thumb sucking, recently went back to it
Saturday, 15 March 2014
Today, a 5 year old, (parents divorced this last year,) had stopped thumb sucking, but recently went back to it. I'm wondering how long to wait, because of the divorce issues and living in 2 households now, etc. She's suppose to let me know when she's ready, but do I put this off for a while due to the divorce?

Why do orthodontists use tongue guards
Saturday, 01 March 2014
I will be speaking to a group of orthodontists, some of whom refer to me. I know our position on rakes, cribs, etc. I looked in the literature and could not find any articles to tell me why orthodontists use these. Is it because they believe it is the best way to close the bite? Do they feel it is a more convenient and easy way to address open bites? Why do they opt for this? Is it based on research and training?

Concerned because they have not been able to break childs thumb sucking habit
Sunday, 10 March 2013
Concerned because we have not been able to break her thumb sucking habit, we have been wrapping her thumb with elastic sports bandage which keeps her from sucking as long as she has it on, but as soon as it comes off the thumb goes back in the mouth. Also, when her thumb is wrapped she sucks on her tongue with her hand near her mouth

Seven year old “balls up his food” and makes a huge mess
Thursday, 10 January 2013
He must ball up his food and stuff it in his mouth. Additionally, he has a history of drooling, although lately he has saliva pooling at the corners of his lips, rather than overt drooling. He maintains an open mouth resting posture with his tongue inside his mouth, but resting against his lower lip. He has an frontal open bite.
