Q:
Quick question- do you think orofacial myology is appropriate for a patient who has a history of cleft palate and Dandy walker syndrome? I did not meet them yet, but their school SLP reached out to me to see if he would be a candidate prior to the recommendation. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you!

A:
Boy, that is a tough one! Without knowing all the symptoms, age, etc., I can just guess at what I would do in this situation.
Most likely, I would not consider it “orofacial myology treatment” unless he is a teen or adult who is able to understand and follow the protocol. I think it is more likely that I would use some of the same myo tools and exercises but might have to be more direct in helping his with the movements, etc. It would be more of a “high level” oral motor approach with the use of your orofacial myology background.
I’m not sure if this is helpful but I hope so. Please fill me in on more details if you wish as it is certainly an interesting case to work through.
My best,
Sandra
