Q: I am very interested in learning more about the structure of your orofacial myology course and the topics you cover. I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me whether you address neurodivergent populations, what your treatment protocol generally looks like and how extensively you cover the muscular component of myofunctional therapy.
A:
Orofacial Myology is for those from 4 years and beyond.
Out of respect for our dental and speech pathologists from around the world with various backgrounds, interests, and work locations (hospitals, dental practices, schools, universities, etc.) this course does not focus on the specifics of every type of client/patient/student that might be seen by our diverse participants. We set the stage for them to be able to thoroughly assess/diagnose and maximize clients. They learn what barriers to success must be addressed prior to working on chewing/swallowing, drooling, orthodontics, and speech production. We teach what to expect from the typical patients. For those considered neurodivergent, we describe how best to “maximize” them as it is unlikely that they will be able to pass each section completely.
As far as the muscular components
We spend time on the muscle functions that relate to treatment and do not waste attendees’ time on what they can easily find online.
Our information is an organized method of assessing clients individually and a very extensive review of the Myo Manual Treatment Program that is included with the course materials.
Because we are the experts in orofacial myology (myofunctional therapy), we are careful not to delve so deeply into myo-adjacent areas as it takes away from the time and attention to details the participants want and expect. I hope this helps answer your questions.
My best,
Sandra
