When NANNY is going to be the adult helper
I have implemented Unplugging the Thumb with a 4 year old. Only after the evaluation and scheduling the initial UTT (Unplugging the Thumb) appointment did the mom inform me that the nanny was going to be the adult helper. What do I do now? They are due to come in later this week and the nanny was not here for the eval, didn’t hear anything I told the mom about the program and how it works, and I am very nervous about what to do. Should I cancel the appointment and tell the mother than she has to be the one to do it with her child? I feel bad because the little girl was so excited to quit and I think she is an excellent candidate for the program.
This is quite a dilemma.
1. The nanny has to be “educated” prior to continuing with the UTT program. I would not begin in this situation until you can see the nanny for an appointment and get her updated about your evaluation findings and how they relate to and stem from, the sucking habit (you didn’t say which habit, so I’ll assume it is the thumb.)
2. The nanny has to know the WHY of the program. Why is it important to follow it carefully, why is it set up the way it is, etc.
3. She has to understand her ROLE of being the main adult who has to be involved for the time frame of the program.
4. She must be with the child every day and helps the child prepare for bedtime
If she can do these things, I think you can give it a go ahead.
