Robert Mason DMD, PhD, ASHA Fellow

Dr. Robert M. Mason received a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Illinois in 1965 and was Dr. Willard Zemlin’s first doctoral student. Dr. Bob was a university professor for ten years before starting dental school in 1973. He has served as Program Director of Speech Pathology at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Associate Professor of Speech Pathology, University of Tennessee, and Program Director of Speech Pathology at the University of Kentucky (U-K), with a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Orthodontics in the dental school at U-K. Dr. Bob completed dental school at the U-K College of Dentistry in 1977 and completed his orthodontic residency at the University of North Carolina under Dr. William Proffit in 1979.

Dr. Bob has the distinction of being the only known PhD level speech-language pathologist/orthodontist combination in North America. As such, he has served as a consultant to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and chaired the two ASHA committees that wrote a position statement and knowledge and skills guidelines for orofacial myofunctional disorders. He has published extensively and widely in speech pathology, orofacial myology, dental and medical journals and texts, with special emphasis on orofacial myofunctional disorders and cleft/craniofacial conditions. He is a Past-President of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA).

Dr. Mason was employed at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, for 17 years, and served as Professor and Chief of Orthodontics in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery. He also maintained a private practice in orthodontics in Durham. He retains a position at Duke Medical Center as Emeritus Professor of Surgery. Dr. Bob is now retired and lives with his wife Gayle in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
