Myo exercises before tongue tie surgery

Q; Before tongue tie surgery, would you consider doing myo exercises to mobilize the tongue? Or wait to do myo after the surgery?

A:  Some therapists do parts of Proficiency Exam 1 prior to the frenectomy, some wait until after the procedure to do any type of exercises.  With younger clients, some therapists will work on Proficiency Exam 1 for a couple of weeks before the surgery to be sure that the client will be compliant with the exercises after surgery and to ensure that they understand the technique.

Some surgeons have created their own protocols; if you are presented with a surgeon’s protocol and you believe it is sensible based on your knowledge as an orofacial myologist, then you might choose to use that protocol; otherwise, the prof exam #1 is recommended.
