Q:
I have two great nieces, sisters 7 and 9, who are ready to stop sucking fingers/thumbs. I think they both use both hands. What should I order for them? I live across the country from them but will be available to them by phone and FaceTime.

Hi,
It is so good to hear from you! I have been out of state and was unable to answer you properly. Because I receive so many emails, texts, calls, etc. each day, I always worry that I have skipped someone (alas, it is usually true!).
If they live together, be careful and select only ONE to begin with first (it need not be the older one; sometimes a younger child is anxious to “show” an older sibling how it is done! Then the older one definitely won’t be outshone, lol!).
You should have the Therapist Guide in your possession but discuss it in detail with the parent who will be the helper for the child. You would send them the Sockie, Chart, stickers, and activity book. I think they should probably have the flash drive but it you can figure a way to do it with them that would be great. You also should keep the certificate so you can present it in a special way when they succeed in the program.
As for sucking both hands, you may recall what we mentioned in class….that you do not give two special Sockies to them. You use just one and don’t mention anything about the other hand since it might work with just the one hand sockied up! If the parent says they are sucking the other hand’s digit, then you tell them to use a plain sock (only one Sockie is a special friend to talk to and help them; thus, only a plain sock on hand two and only if needed). I believe as our grad you may still order just the “loose” items separately so as not to have to pay for a second full UTT package. It might be available on your MyoGrads ONLY page on our website in the store. I hope you already have your passcode from Greta to get the freebies and other items on that page. If not, contact Greta and ask for your code.
I hope I thought of everything. Let me know any other questions you have.
Here’s hoping you have great success! If you succeed well with the Facetime/skyping, let me know as I would love to have you do a write up about it for an upcoming Orofacial Myology News edition!
