I have a 10 year old son who sucks his thumb and I have no idea how to get him to stop. I have talked to him about quitting and absolutely disagrees with me.

You ask a very important question and as with most things, there are a lot of questions I'd have to ask before giving you a good answer.

Considerations when diagnosing
Thursday, 23 June 2011
It is my findings using my past examinations that a hyper-gag might be common with ankyloglossia. I do not have formal research yet, but rather just my experience with patients. There are incidences of gagging, choking, feeing like the food is clogging up the "throat," etc.

Is there is a consensus that a tongue thrusting pattern is “normal”/typical up to a certain age?
Monday, 02 May 2011
tongue thrusting tends to spontaneously regress over time as neuromotor development results in the tongue elevating under control and as the dimensions of the oral cavity and pharynx are adapted to by the tongue. For 2, 3, 4, and even 5 year olds, it is not abnormal to see a tongue thrust, and when noted, this does not automatically indicate the need for treatment. In some cases, it is important NOT to treat such children.

Habit returned in 3 months thumb device did not work
Saturday, 11 December 2010
I thought my 10 year old son had been cured of his thumbsucking habit after having a thumb crib removed which he had worn for 3 months. It really seems like he is being punished for something he isn't even aware of doing. He dreads having that thing replaced if he can't stop and the pressure of having a deadline to quit has made him quite depressed.
